Koh Phra Thong & Koh Ra coastal ecosystems

About Us

The Andaman coast off Khuraburi is fortunate to host three distinctive and highly important marine eco-systems.

- Coral Reef
- Seagrass
- Mangrove Forest

The importance of these habitats can not be underestimated in their respective roles in maintaining the health and fecundity of the surrounding seas. The links above will transfer to more specific information on the Koh Phra Thong website.

Mangrove, Reef & Seagrass Nurseries

Juveniles of a large number of marine species reside in seagrass, mangrove and coastal reef locations throughout their infancy. Many then migrate to the open ocean during maturity.

These environments also provide homes for a broad range of other species. Unique members of the plant and animal kingdom can only be found within these intricate ecosystems. For example the highly endangered Dugong are still sighted in the waterways around Koh Ra and Koh Phra Thong.

Densest Mangrove Forests in Thailand

Thankfully, this part of the Andaman coastline still has some of the largest mangrove forest in Thailand. The sea grass coverage was significantly damaged during the 2004 Tsunami, as was some of the more exposed reef.

Nevertheless regrowth of these important marine habitats has been evident in the last few years and as long as other environmental stressors can be kept at bay then hopefully they will regain their former splendour.

Marine Conservation Opportunities

For the 2010-2011 season Blue Guru Diving will be running special eco dive trips around Koh Phra Thong and Koh Ra. The initial purpose of these explorations will be to gain information on the marine life in and around the mangroves, to investigate and monitor the coverage of sub-tidal seagrass beds and to record vital data on the resurgent coral reef in Golden Buddha Bay.

Why not join a Blue Guru eco dive adventure and help uncover the secrets of some of Thailand's most remarkable underwater habitats?
