What is Koh Phra Thong?
Koh Phra Thong is one of Thailand's last unspoiled coastal locations. With over 15km of largely uninhabited white sandy beaches. The island is relatively large with a total area of around 100km.
Why Koh Phra Thong?
Koh Phra Thong is an ideal choice for those seeking an 'off the beaten track' Thai Island.
Koh Phra Thong is the closest habitable island to Thailand's best scuba diving at Richelieu Rock. It is also one of the few places where you can dive direct from the beach!
Where is Koh Phra Thong?
Koh Phra Thong is located in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of southern Thailand. The middle link in a chain of 3 islands, it is close to the port town of Khuraburi, situated on the mainland about 10km east. Koh Phra Thong is about 550km south of Bangkok and 100km north of Phuket.
Nature on Koh Phra Thong
This island hosts a number of important eco-systems. These include areas of mangrove forest, seagrass and coral reef. There is a good number of bird species & interesting mammals. The sea holds a wealth of biodiversity with the beaches being protected for turtle nesting.
Dive boats at Koh Phra Thong
All of the snorkeling & scuba diving spots at Koh Phra Thong are either available directly off the beach or by a short boat ride on a long tail boat or on the Blue Guru zodiac, 'Kanga'.
Longtails & Zodiacs
When we only have a few divers then it is easy enough to transfer to the dive sites at Koh Pling on 'Kanga'. She will whip us out there in a matter of minutes to enjoy some exclusive diving.
On days when there are more divers we may use one of the local longtail boats to take us to the reef.
Koh Phra Thong is one of the few Thai islands which has genuine scuba diving from the beach. This means that if you prefer not to dive from a boat then you don't have to. One Blue Guru's favourite dive sites at Koh Pling is accessible directly from our beach side dive centre.
Local scuba diving schedule
The Blue Guru diving schedule at Koh Phra Thong is quite flexible. The dive shop is close to all the dive sites so often you can just come to the shop and dive. However, we do like to apply a structure and it is best to register your interest soon after your arrival on KPT.
Even though it is possible to arrange a dive in the morning and another in the afternoon, we tend to configure the schedule according to the optimum time of the tides. This will normally allow for one (or sometimes two) good local dive each day with the peak diving time changing on a daily basis.
Local & National Park Diving
Local diving is normally available every day. However, busy Surin Islands (usually scheduled every Tuesday) & Richelieu Rock (usually scheduled every Thursday & Friday) national park trips may leave us short staffed on Koh Phra Thong. and in this case local dives will not be scheduled.
Long dive times
The local dive sites at Koh Phra Thong are quite shallow and afford the possibility of long dives. The Blue Guru Instructors & Divemasters are keen to find new macro life so you can expect dive times of about 1hr.

Discover Scuba Diving
Before leaping forwards with a Koh Phra Thong snorkeling trip, Blue Guru asks you to strongly consider whether you or your family would like to try a PADI Discover Scuba Diving program.
Koh Phra Thong is one of the best places in Thailand to try this as the diving is shallow and accessible directly from the beach. The dive sites are our own and we only teach very small groups. Blue Guru has extensive experience teaching Kids & family groups and the vast majority of people LOVE IT!
